The ladies of the village book club have gathered to discuss Neville Shute’s On The Beach. Some of the members have not read the book and the others seem more interested in discussing - or rather gossiping - about people and events in the village which spill over into the meeting.

The ladies have gathered again, this time with a new member, the vicar’s newlywed. Once again, gossip and tittle-tattle overwhelm the discussion of the chosen book, ‘The Rector’s Wife’, and the new member finds herself and husband Dennis are the centre of attention.
