Joan's latest play, The Rape of Artemisia Gentileschi, will run from 4th-26th August 2017 at Venue 39 (Radisson Hotel, Royal Mile, EH11 1TH) at this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival, presented by Drunken Sailor Productions.
Starring Julia Munrow and Julia Rufey, the play tells Artemisia Gentileschi's harrowing story. She was one of the great Baroque artists, famed for her dramatic and realistic paintings.
At 17 her life was changed when Agostino Tassi violently raped her. She was viciously tortured during his trial to see if she was telling the truth, leaving her hands horribly injured.
The play contains descriptions of rape and torture which are upsetting.
