Rosetti's Women - rewritten for Edinburgh 2021

Raunchy and racy, Rossetti’s Women, delves into the outrageous sex life and disastrous marriage of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the 19th century poet, illustrator, painter and translator, who founded the Pre-Raphaelite
Brotherhood.

The Play

The story is told through the eyes of Fanny Cornforth, a prostitute who became Rossetti’s housekeeper, model and mistress. From the mid-1860’s Rossetti began to see the ghost of his wife, Lizzie, who had committed suicide after hearing that her husband was with Fanny. In order to impress his new love, Jane Morris he had exhumed Lizzie’s coffin to retrieve his poetry which he had buried with her. Fanny loved Rossetti until the end of his life and eventually she was the only woman. However, she was turned out of the house when Rossetti became ill and his estranged middle-class family decided to reclaim him shortly before his death in 1882. She got her own back in the sales of his paintings which she had ‘acquired’ during her time in the household.
